Digital Eye Strain
Digital Eye Strain is a type of eye fatigue associated with prolonged computer viewing which is experienced by up to 90% of screen users.
Symptoms differ for each person, but typically include:
- Dry eyes
- Tired Eyes
- Headache
- Neck Ache
- Blurring
- Glare
These symptoms may be caused by:
- Poor working habits
- Inappropriate lighting
- Improper screen set-up
- Uncorrected vision problems
- A combination of all these factors
How is it Diagnosed?
Digital Eye Strain is diagnosed when one or more of the above issues are experienced when viewing a digital screen. The level of discomfort appears to increase proportionally with screen use. The symptoms may range from mild to debilitating, with the net result being reduced productivity, anxiety and time off work.
How is it Treated?
Luckily, Digital Eye Strain is not permanent. The symptoms will typically disappear when away from the screen. Our increasing reliance on screens for work and leisure is here to stay. Digital Eye Strain is an emerging public health issue; it is now the most common computer-related repetitive strain injury amongst workers, surpassing carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. It can no longer be ignored.
